I don't know if this feature exists, but is it possible to autopan in JOSM?

When I'm tracing rivers or long straight roads, I'm usually click-click-click to add nodes, then I have to pan by dragging with the right mouse button, then click-click-click to add more nodes. I thought it would be helpful if the dragging with the right mouse button could be eliminated. It would be cool if JOSM centred the window when I (left) clicked to add a node on that new node. This way I would not have to manually drag & pan.

Is there such a feature in JOSM, or a plugin that does it?

(I'm using JOSM version 7480)

I guess you are looking for the "Viewport Following". From the view menu in JOSM select "Viewport Following" (expert mode only, see also JOSM view menu help).

@BlueTiger: :-) I saw this menu entry before but never tested/used it (I wrongly assumed it is to be used together with live GPS data). Very interesting!
