I have gps with barometric altimeter (Garmin eTrex 30). I would like to extract inclines from it.

What is the best way to do it?

To clarify.

In Saturday I cycled 230 km. None of routes I cycled had inclination tag. To calculate inclination manually would take huge amount of time. Is there the SMART way to extract incline?

Hi Batat, whats the make of the altimeter and did you read the manual or contacted the brand ?

@Hendrikklaas Tried to clarify question.

(not that it's got anything to do with OpenStreetMap, but) do you want the "total ascent" number (as in how far you climbed in total during the course of a GPX)? If so, trying sticking those words into a search engine and you'll get several answers on various cycling forums.

I googled "i want to see my cycle climb in my gpx" and got lots of ideas

that help system is full broken (since days) ... Now I even cannot edit my own answer (which I converted from a comment for testing). Maybe we should switch it off before the DB gets corrupted... Ooh, now it worked again. Iiiinteresting.

@aseerel4c26 edits do actually work; they just don't redisplay immediately. Convert answer to comment of an answer works (at least sometimes), but convert answer to comment of an qustion does not.

@SomeoneElse: (meta cont.) yes, I know the lag/cache/whatever problem. But in this case the "edit" link was not even displayed. I have no response from support@opens... yet. I hope someone finds time to work on the problems.

grrr... these server errors bug me. This was a comment (on question), I wanted to add a link (from another comment) and convert it back to a comment. But the last step does not work currently. Sorry.

@SomeoneElse: (meta cont.) Tom H. just wrote me an mail that he is now working on these problems. :-)

If you wanted remove air pressure changes from elevation to get best accuracy a spare stationary gps also with a barometer could be used re calibrate your moving one.

(meta cont.) Writing mails with Tom on the convert issue... Uploading files works again. And, yes, I will delete all that crap here once the problems have settled.

IMHO the incline tag is really only helpful on short steep climbs/decents that cannot be determined from STRM due to its low resolution. Further the value is supposed to reflect the maximum incline on the stretch in question and not the average, simply substracting start elevation from end elevation is not going to result in correct results.

My solution is simply to examine the noteable climbs in an external program (in my case SportTracks) and manually extract the maximum incline from that.

It is also helpful in deep valleys, where STRM could not capture them. Or in any area with highly variable slope grades.

No, I would like to add incline tag to OSM map for different route segments I cycled through.

I other case I need to subtract elevation on start of segment from elevation from end of segment. Segment = GPX/XML node.

It sounds like something that could most usefully belong in an OSM editor rather than a post-processor such as GPSBabel, but I'm not aware of an OSM editor that can do this.

In addition to "subtract elevation on start of segment from elevation from end" you'd need to manually indicate the start and end of a particular incline. I have a Garmin eTrex Vista HCx (which also has a barometric altimeter, and all "trkpt" trackpoints have an "ele" tag that contains the measured elevation, so the data's availble (have a look at my traces to compare with yours if you want to see if the data is in the same format - you'll need to find a text editor that can understand xml better than e.g. Windows Notepad, of course).

Of the OSM editors available, JOSM is the most likely support this. It does support plugins and it's possible that someone may be working on something similar, or may in the future do so.
