Abandoned railways are usually very hard to see on the ground unless they have found a new use such as a cycleway. Mapnik renders them in a way that makes them look like a feature I should be able to see as I pass by. Wouldn't this be better left off the main Mapnik map unless they have been tagged with a new use, such as highway=cycleway which render sensibly.

People who are interested in abandoned railways can then render them on a specialist map which would also show them even where they have been given a new use. On Mapnik the new use completely covers the abandoned railway.

This is not a question with a definite answer but the start for a discussion. It should be discussed, but most likely not here.
