Which style is proper or preferred:

  1. Entire parking area is covered with a single area:

    https://www.openstreetmap.org/#map=19/48.11060/11.63283

  2. Only the actual parking places are indicated, each with an area:

    https://www.openstreetmap.org/#map=18/48.09225/11.59476

Here's another example, it's more apparent if you switch on the areal background so you can see the painted lines:

Isn't there just a big parking area in example 1, and several smaller parking areas in example 2? I don't see different mapping styles there.

With the new example, I think I understand what you are getting at.

Parking areas should not only include the parking spaces themselves, but also the access roads between the parking spaces and similar infrastructure. It is common to also include smaller sections of scrub or other decorations.

If you want to map the individual parking spaces or blocks of parking spaces, you can use areas tagged amenity=parking_space. They must not replace the parking area, but be mapped in addition to it.
