See previous versions of maps

Hi! For historic research I want to reference former railroad lines. OSM often plots those in, but I found that over time the old lines are removed (noticed that around the Buffalo, NY area). In some cases those were replaced by paths, in most cases they are just gone. I understand that for current use these old right of ways are no longer applicable and often get used for other purposes. From a historic perspective the former presence of such rail links explains why streets and entire neighborhoods are shaped the way they are today. Is there any way to see older versions of the maps?
