This must probably be the most stupid question ever on OSM-help. But nowhere do I find a download button nor a method to select an area which I want a map of. Why is it so hard to find?

I mean a map for a handheld gps. In my case Oregon 600 and/or Edge 705.

When you say "map" do you mean something that you can print out, something that you load onto a handheld GPS, satnav or mobile phone, or something that you can load into a graphics program to do more work on?

Here is what I found to be a good guide to the processes of getting an OSM onto a Garmin the first time. It is done in a similar way at other 'OSM Map On Garmin' download sites. dcrainmaker

Openstreetmap is a project that concentrates on creating a database of open geodata. While there are some services on the main project website, we rely on other parties to provide a myriad of services based on our geodata.

In our wiki we have a list of places that offer ready made maps for Garmin GPSs.

P.S. Simply searching this help site for "Garmin" would have given you the same answer much faster.
