How can I add “synonyms” to Nominatim?

1

Hi there.

I had a look at the Nominatim page on the wiki (several times) but still can't figure out what is the best way to contribute to that search engine as the information there is really confusing. (Should I file a bug? Should I add terms to the wiki? Should I go to TranslateWiki?)

My issue here is that when I search for "Botanical garden", Nominatim will not show anything named "Botanic garden", and vice-versa, which is an issue as both terms are equivalent.

Where can I add a simple extra synonym rule like "botanic = botanical" or something of the kind?

I am not adding a special phrase (a word leading to a particular tag search) as there is no specific tag for botanical gardens at the moment.

Cheers

I'm afraid that this isn't possible at the moment, as far as I know. Nominatim doesn't support spell corrections or suggestions for similar search results.

Hmm that's a shame - it really feels like Nominatim gives a bad name to OSM for people who judge by the front page's capacity to find points of interest. I guess this will become increasingly an issue with routing apparently being implemented for the front page.

That's correct, such a feature would be really nice. But at the moment OSM lacks developers who have enough time to implement it.
