Can way have more than 2000 nodes?

As I processed the full history dump of OSM data, I found there are ways which have more than 2000 nodes, some even more than 10,000. Is that possible? I wonder if there some exceptions for certain geo-features, e.g. coastline..

One more question, does the upper limit number (2000) include duplicated nodes?

I've not looked at the full history dump, but are those ways current versions, or historical? I don't think there used to be a limit, and long ways had to be split at some point before a certain update, so I would expect you to find some old ways that were more than 2000 nodes, but no current ones.

I count the number of each way of its latest version, yes it still might be years ago. I will have a look. Thanks
