I suspect there won't be one answer for this one... but I'd like to hear some ideas for how it might be appropriate to arrange/tag/map a hiking and cycling route (relation) given these issues:

  • The route divides in places so hikers and cyclists are recommended to take separate paths.
  • Sections of the cycle route and joint route are rough and suitable mainly for mountain bikes (not 'cycleway')
  • Cycling is legally allowed on most of the walking paths (and walking on the cycling sections of course).

(And yes this is a signed route with website etc - not just a virtual route)

IMHO a no brainer: two relations one for the walking one for the cycling route. While this creates some unneeded redundancy it is still the easiest to handle, both from a tagging and a maintenance pov.

Also, for sections that are only meant for mountain bikes, see the MTB page.

This was certainly my initial thought. I suppose I wondered if we could be more subtle about any of this... for instance I was a bit put off the MTB tags because this isn't really mountain bike route as such, just cross country cycle route which isn't suitable for basic city bikes and road (i.e racing) bikes. Maybe simple is best I suppose.
