Hi I would like to a use new 'no name' map on my Garmin extrex30 each day to assist in cycling around the unnamed ways. (a map with the unnamed ways highlighted) what is the best method? Can a zoomed in Simon Poole QA map image be converted? I tried using MapWarper to change a screen shot png to make a kml file but that did not open in BaseCamp, etrex or in JaVaWa. Other options did not appear suitable. I tried the filter in Josm using type:way highway= -name= and this is ok to use as all the unnamed ways are black but on trying to convert to a Garmin suitable map I got this error using mkgmap ...

I have also tried using the ready made OSMAustralia images which are excellent but they are normally not updated in time for my next ride. Thanks Nev iMac 7.1 OS X 10.6.8 Snow Leopard, java version "1.6.0_65" Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_65-b14-462-10M4609) Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 20.65-b04-462, mixed mode) asked 24 Mar '14, 05:37 nevw |
I found yesterday that Macx osx 10.6.8 (snow leopard) updated to the free Mavericks os 10.9.2 and therefore was able to load a later java version from java.com. Having installed that, I can now use the mkgmap program which has a prerequisite for java 7. I downloaded a current osm area through Josm and using mkgmap produced one of their noname style img maps for the Garmin. /Library/Internet\ Plug-Ins/JavaAppletPlugin.plugin/Contents/Home/bin/java -jar /Applications/mkgmap-r3132/mkgmap.jar --gmapsupp --style=noname --output-dir=/Users/xxx/Documents/xxx/ /Users/xxx/Documents/xxx/Josm_file.osm This has produced a very good result for tracking down unnamed ways. answered 29 Mar '14, 06:36 nevw |
I have just discovered a reasonable method by saving a suitable zoomed in jpg screenshot of the up to date Simon Poole QA map image using the help from this Garmin site.
The new creation overlays the normal map used and it is suitable for my purpose and is quick enough to do regularly. answered 24 Mar '14, 06:56 nevw 2
It's relatively easy to create a No-name transparent layer using mkgmap. I used to do this regularly when we lacked many names in the UK. I think All-in-One map may still have a suitable style sheet.
