When I have my 60CSx plugged into my laptop via USB and select "mass USB storage" on the GPS menu, I hear the "ding" and temporarily see the device pop up on Windows Explorer but then it immediately disappears. What's wrong?

This is a question for Garmin support, it is not specific or directly related to OpenStreetMap.

I would suggest you ask the question in the appropriate place and provide information about which Windows version you are using (Win 95 .. 8.1, 32 or 64 bit) and which firmware is on your Garmin. I'd also check your USB ports and cable.
