I have exported data in .osm format. When I open it in global mapper the vector data has many additional lines that extend to an unknown point. What is this point? and how can I remove it so that the data looks like that in Open Street Map?

You should direct this question at the makers of the software that you are using. Similar problems with Global Mapper are reported frequently. This article in a Global Mapper forum might be a good starting point.
