This is the standard method of marking bike and especially bus routes; is there a way to verify that a route is complete and unique?

The only one I've used recently is http://betaplace.emaitie.de/webapps.relation-analyzer/ but I'm unsure on its support for forward and backward roles. Regardless, it's a very good tool for checking for gaps.

Nope - 27 unconnected segments. Nakor's awesome tool works with the directional roles (north/south/east/west) common on U.S. road relations, but not with forward/backward.
