I'm new to editing on OSM. I do like it though. On the map near our house there's another house that burnt down 10 years ago a ruin now. My question is how do I assign "ruin" to an existing building on the map? I found this: http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Key:ruins but I don't understand how to add this using the online editor..?

Thanks, Timo

Ok, thanks for your replies. It was not unclear to me what I should assign, but how. I used the online editor and I did not see Ruins in the tags drop-down. (And I did not want to just try and mess up) I discovered now that it's dynamically populated as it does appear when I start typing.

I set building=house ruins=yes now

Thanks for your help

Hi Timo, welcome. What’s unclear with the tags, building=yes for the state of the former building and ruins=yes for the actual state of it ? The text lines can be added in any editor, ID, P1 or P2, JOSM or Merkatoor in the advanced menu. Just click advanced and you’re in it. Look here as well for a not yet completely broken down and ruined building, its an old wooden shed crumbling down slowly. http://www.openstreetmap.org/#map=19/52.29750/6.66198

Actually there are a few different schemas in use, which can make things confusing. Luckyly in this case we can use multiple schemes at a time and improve descriptiveness :

building=ruin ruins=house

There's a broader review of the different "life cycle" tagging schemes, and their pros/cons, here: http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Comparison_of_life_cycle_concepts
