I'm trying to add some footpaths. When I view the area at one zoom level the GPS tracks are shown as being slightly N of the background image. At the next zoom level up they are slightly S. A couple of features in the background appear/disappear at the two zoom levels, confirming that they were taken at different times. So, should I ignore the background and just use the traces, or work at a particular zoom level?

Thanks.

GPS tracks are generally a better standard to use than imagery, as imagery can be off--sometimes significantly so. If you have reliable tracks, or all existing data is slightly off from the imagery, you can adjust the imagery to the data these ways:

  • in Potlatch 2, hold down "space" and drag the background
  • in iD, open the Background menu, at the bottom there is a Fix Alignment menu with arrows you can use to make adjustments
  • in JOSM, offset settings can be found at Imagery -> Imagery offset. There is also an imagery offset database which can be used in JOSM via the imagery_offset_db plugin.

Hi, could you post a link to the location where your footpaths are or where you want them to add ? Feel free to add your footpaths anyway and keep a close watch at the area to see if they need to be moved. If you make a GPS track, make sure there’s a road of any significance in your track to control the rest of the track. If the control points are at the right place, go ahead and trust your own track. Dont look to much to the changes in the zoom levels, they could change slightly as well. Welcome and keep mapping.
