Tile Resources

0

Morning guys n girls

We've been working with Umap to create some private or individual walk related maps. Getting on fine with it and they offer a number of tile back grounds for us to choose from.

Browsing the web there are some very beautiful tiles layers that I've seen on some of the paid services. In a scenario what we would like to do is

a) source some different tile options for the maps b) download those tiles and change say the sea colour or the land mass colours c) remove some of the tourism icons that draw from OSM and apply our own.

For an Island of some 4 by 9 miles where do we start looking and even if we got hold of some Open Source layers what tools are used to change the look of the maps.

Thanks in advance

You don't download tiles and then change colours; you change the style that is used to generate tiles and then generate them anew. Type "render my own map" in the search box and read some of the results; you may want to look into TileMill or Maperitive, both of which are capable of turning OSM data into tiles according to rules that you specify.
