So I'm a newbie with etrex20, SD card & a Mac spending winters in Florida. I've manage to successfully download & install the Generic routable map for most segments of Florida. When I downloaded it I asked for the TYP mapnik file also as I saw it gave better rendering. But I didn't know what to do with the file when I got it, so I didn't install. First what is TYP? What's "mapnik"? I'm sure the file was compressed so I probably decompressed it. I assume it's a STAND ALONE file in addition to the map file? I would be very appreciative if someone could give me help installing & answering my questions. Thank you.

There are lots of different downloadable OSM maps for Garmins - where did you download yours from?

"generic routable" is very likely from http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl/.

"generic routable" is very likely a map from garmin.openstreetmap.nl which also matches the described option of selecting a TYP file. Next to this option there is a large question mark leading to a page describing the TYP file:

Maps can be rendered more appealing when a TYP file is used. Only the generic map allows an optional TYP file to be include. The OpenFietsMap lite map comes with it's own mandatory TYP file.

Although a TYP file makes the map more appealing it also increases the loading times on the GPS, so if you have an slower or older GPS type then you probably don't want a TYP file included.

To select a TYP file just click on the drop-down box and select the TYP file you want to include.

The following TYP files are currently available:

* Mapnik. This TYP file tries to mimick the Mapnik stylesheet as used by the main OpenStreetMap slippy map.

So when choosing the Mapnik TYP file the resulting map on your Garmin device should look very similar to the default rendering style on openstreetmap.org.

Thanks for the above info BUT did not answer my question. What do I do with this TYP file when I receive it as well as the generic routable map I requested. Thank you.

As far as I know the TYP file is already embedded into the gmapsupp.img so you don't have to do anything else. I guess the separate download is just for references.
