I've read through the documentation on the wiki (which is extremely confusing) and it looks like there are several possible ways that Mayan ruins could be tagged:

  1. historic: ruins
  2. historic: archeological site
  3. historic: archeological site; ruins: yes
  4. historic: building; ruins: yes

Which of these is correct?

Hi kaldari (look here or but you've don that. You even could use both tags for the description of the remains. And please have a look at other geological / historical sites that have been tagged already. IMHO use historic=ruins, ruin_type=city / temple, civilisation=Mayan, historic:period=1300 - 1400, material=stone

Looking at taginfo, historic:civilization= has many more uses (~1200) than civilization= (30) (and historic:civilisation, note the s instead of z, is even less), so I'd recommend using that. Also, note that the value should be lower-case (i.e. -- mayan not Mayan)

historic=archeological_site I would use for the complete area where the historic buildings are located.
historic=building (maybe with building=temple or something alike) I would use for the single buildings and if appropriate also ruins=yes.

One other thing to check in addition to the wiki and taginfo is the Historical Objects map, which shows a number of history-related tags. For example, you can view other Mayan sites like Chichen Itza to see how they're tagged.
