I am only interested in updating the maps my Garmen Nuvii for the United States. This site is too technical for me. Can someone please help me? asked 10 Feb '11, 21:41 Ken Rasheed TomH ♦♦ |
We can try - unfortunately (as you've noticed) the openstreetmap site isn't really designed with people just wanting to use the data in mind. Maybe if we could try and take it one step at a time? A previous answer to this question: http://help.openstreetmap.org/questions/1924/north-carolina-maps suggested to look at the "OSM_Map_On_Garmin/Download" wiki page. On there there's a link to this site: http://daveh.dev.openstreetmap.org/garmin/Lambertus/ and in there are lots of folders, each with a different date on it. There's one created every couple of weeks. The most recent folder is this one: http://daveh.dev.openstreetmap.org/garmin/Lambertus/30-01-2011/ and in there there are 14 map downloadable maps (the ".img" files) and a "README" file: http://daveh.dev.openstreetmap.org/garmin/Lambertus/30-01-2011/README which asks "Which file do I use?" and goes on to explain that the size of the map that you can install depends on how much space there is on the SD card that you have in your Nuvi. So the first questions therefore are:
answered 10 Feb '11, 23:25 SomeoneElse ♦ as your nuvi is primarily an in car device and you want an updated map i don't think osm maps will give you spoken directions so don't over-write what you have already, save it first.

I have a Nuvi (a 265W for what it's worth) and the "woman inside the satnav" has no problem speaking the names of OSM street names and road name references. In fact, where street names and references are available both are spoken, making directions (at least with the maps that I've loaded of the UK) clearer with OSM than with the original Garmin map.

The other point about "don't delete your existing map" is well made, but adding an extra map on an SD card just makes another map available on the Nuvi on the "Tools / Settings / Map / Map Info" screen - you can choose which to use for navigation without deinstalling or reinstalling maps.

The low end nüvi's don't read street names, only the models targeting professional drivers (the cabbie/delivery/trucker models).
