Is it normal that an element that is visible in edit mode (e.g., see "Fort de Ratonneau", perfectly visible in http://www.openstreetmap.org/edit?editor=id#map=16/43.2833/5.3085 or in http://www.openstreetmap.org/edit?editor=potlatch2#map=18/43.28297/5.31166) does not appear in "view mode" (see http://www.openstreetmap.org/#map=16/43.2833/5.3085)? |
Yes it is perfectly normal, because not everything can be rendered on one map. On the Main OSM map it does appear as a name but for example on Historical Objects Map it does appear as a symbol. |
This is easily the most asked and most answered question on the OSM help site. A good visual rendering of the geo-data (commonaly called a "map") needs to be selective on what it actually displays, particularly when so much data is available as in OSM. You will either need to ask the maintainer of the "standard" map style to add a rendering rule for castles to the style or use/create a custom style for your purposes. See for example http://geschichtskarten.openstreetmap.de/historische_objekte/?zoom=16&lat=43.28327&lon=5.31107&layers=B0000FFFT (it seems that it doesn't render the polygon at this point in time). 1
Hi take a look at these fortresses for more possible tags at Dinant http://www.openstreetmap.org/#map=16/50.4596/4.8626 and Givet http://www.openstreetmap.org/#map=15/50.1359/4.8063. There several examples by Vauban in France. Au revoir

Thanks, I added the tag "tourism = attraction" to the castle description and now it does show on the main map.
