Hi; I am completley new to osm. My background is google maps api v3.

I am trying to determine whether or not to learn osm and its editors. I will if I know it can solve my issue.

Google does not permit the setting of which zoom levels road names appear and/or disappear.

I need to print out a copy of My google map with as many of the road names as possible. I usually print out a 5 mile radius, then I expand the map to fit my printed page. This means that I have virtually "zoomed in" and I have lots of space for road names, but they are not displayed.

Question/Decision Is it possible with osm and/or its "editors" to display road names that are normally no visible at normal (default) zoomed out levels. If so how.

I hope my question is clear. Just in case it is not clear here is an example.

zoomed in: elm street is labeled elm street. zoomed out: elm street has no label.

thank you

You don't actually need an "editor" for your purposes, you need a custom map rendering. In other words you need to define a map style which suits your needs. There are many ways to do this, but potentially Maperitive would be a good choice (see maperitive.net).

The question is not uncommon, you will find more answers on this site.
