Can I overlay the map with lines of longitude and latitude to obtain grid references?

What / where (URL) is "the map"? What is your usecase?

This depends on your webmap toolkit how to realize this functionality. There are also some maps with grids out there: http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Maps

Try to enter "grid" in the text search box at the top of this FAQ site ... there a some hints about that topic.
