at zoom level 16 & 17 there is a big polygon covering a large portion of the map the makes small buildings undetectable.

"undetectable" means what? Just by chance: Does that mean unselectable in "iD editor"?

The problem was that a residential area had been changed to a "building=damaged" by mistake. It's already been fixed some hours ago (as part of this changeset). Tiles are gradually being rerendered (if you zoom in you'll see that it no longer appears).

There's more information about how tiles are rendered here.

thanks for the response, guess i would have to wait for it to be fixed at zoom level 16

hopefully it would be fixed soon.

Have a read of the "more information" link - it says "there is a way to manually overwrite this expiry mechanism by appending a /dirty to the url which will append the tile to the back of the rendering queue".
