Is it still possible to load OpenStreetMap maps on to the latest Garmin etrex 20? I was told in my local store at the point of sale that Garmins now block this function. I decided against purchasing until I checked this out but cant find any information about devices 'blocking' non Garmin specific file formats online. Hopefully the salesperson is wrong, as I was really looking forward to getting started with a GPS. Can anybody advise?

No, they don't block OSM files. I don't even think that would be possible because they still use the same map format as with previous devices. OSM files work without problems on Garmin etrex 20/30 even with the newest firmware (currently 3.40). For more information see the Garmin and Garmin/eTrex_series wiki pages.

Strictly speaking they aren't 'OSM files', so they can't be blocked.

They are generally OSM data converted into the (proprietary) Garmin file format as appropriate to the .img file extension.

If you only need small sections of OSM. you could try The Custom Map feature that the Vista 20 has see https://help.openstreetmap.org/questions/27269/is-there-a-simple-way-to-create-a-garmin-custom-map-kmz-type-from-osm-data

Actually this seems to be country-specific. My etrex20 (bought in Germany) used OSM files just fine when I bought it. But it now very efficiently blocks both german and swiss OSM files. It seems to be OK for France, Spain, and even Mexico. My daughter updated the software in August and the problem started after that.

Can you list the url of the source of the osm data converted to garmin format that you are trying to use thanks.

Also, could you be a bit more specific about how the "block" manifests itself? What are you doing to convert OSM data to a Garmin format (or download OSM data in a Garmin format) and what are you doing to transfer it? What tells you that it is blocked?

@mountainminxOSM converted your comment to a comment. As nevw and SomeoneElse have pointed out this probably needs more information to be resolved.

Did existing on device maps stop working when the software was upgraded, or were these newly installed maps?
