Why not ask your question on the new OpenStreetMap Community Forum?

I am new to this kind of data. I am publishing a book and want to download some maps of cities, simplify them. And I also want to add one map where I can put in lines for 'walks' around the city. Any help very much appreciated!

Maybe a good starting point for this task can be OSM on Paper or SVG

or Rendering in general.

Tell us if you have found any graphic that comes near your aim, then we can search for more.
