Hi, I am trying to set up a mapping app that I can use offline internationally without roaming costs. How do I get good detail maps downloaded for a large area? E.g Northern Portugal Also can I import other map formats? Thanks Andrew |

There are several apps for mobile devices that can work offline, either by pre-downloading tiles, or by rendering the maps on the fly from vector data. I can personally recommend Navit (disclaimer: I'm a developer), but there are many others. See e.g. http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Routing for a list. |

You could try MapWithMe, it is available for Android or iPhone/iPad. It uses OpenStreetMap based mapping. It allows downloading vector maps to use offline, you can download a whole country at once. You don't say what kind of device you are using. On the chance that it is an Android based smartphone, I've been using OsmAnd with the downloaded "off line" maps. I generally have data turned off on my phone and the only issue is that it can take a little while for the GPS to lock if the phone can't with communicate with Google and get an approximate location based on the cell tower(s) and WiFi network(s) it detects near by. So I spend some quality minutes stationary while the GPS locks before starting off. Up side is it works anywhere, even in the mountains away from the cellular system and any WiFi networks. |

Ok, eg. I would like to use the cycle maps, as they have contours at a 1:50000 type scale or better for off road expeds 4x4. Ideally I would like to download a large area eg North Portugal
I am currently using an ipad but i dont mind buying a samsung if it would work better.
@Morlich: Thanks, that is helpful. Meta: I am just not sure if it is useful for this site to answer a question for both operating systems in one (question and answers). I tend to think not because it would duplicate the operating system specific questions/answers. Not sure what others think.
