How do I tag a large field of mown grass, not marked out with any pitches, that is attached to a primary school for their use only? Currently I have it as landuse=grass.

landuse=grass or maybe landuse=recreation_ground sounds about right to me. Either way I'd probably add access=private and possibly some tag (operator?) that relates it to the school if it isn't already within an amenity=school polygon.

Thanks for replying Ed. I'll leave it as landuse=grass and add the access=private tag as you suggest.

So this is yet another problem with the landuse/landcover thingy.. I mean it's both recreation_ground and grass.

Consider also leisure=park, access=private.

landuse=recreation_ground

surface=grass/asphalt/sand/woodchip/artificial_turf ...

optionally, operator=School District name ...

Does anyone other than the Los Angeles Unified School District really consider a parking lot as a designated recreation ground?

If, as you say, it's attached to the school then just extend the amenity=school polygon to cover the playing field too.
