Please type "garmin" in the text search box of this FAQ site ... there are already a bunch of answers about OSM based maps on Garmin devices.

I need specific directions. I've been all over the Garmin search & find nothing I can use. As I asked before, How do I download OSM and update maps into my Garmin nuvi 855? I've never used OSM before. Your help will be much appreciated.

Did you stumble across this article in your travels? It's helped other people in the past:

@nickstermon: how to download garmin (just click this link) in the search box here yields good results.

(14 Oct '13, 21:17) aseerel4c26 ♦

You should be able to find the directions you need in this Q&A similar questions have been asked quite a few times - or you could try this link garmin.openstreetmap.nl. Garmin is trying to sell Sat Navs and Maps so won't help with OSM.

Do as shephan75 says and also type OSM on Garmin into the search box of the documentation link on the map page. After you have sourced a map, downloaded it, unzipped it, renamed it if necessary, and transferred it to your device, let us know how it goes. good luck.

How do I download the USA map? On http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl/ it does not show how or where. I already selected USA so how is it downloaded?

(21 Oct '13, 14:43) nickstermon

Hi i just tried the usa and then canada from the drop down menu and nothing happened but selecting australia from the oceania menu selected the correct parts on the map below and gave a download link. ??? Are the usa and canada too big for a single download and you need to select smaller sections ?

Seems so

@nickstermon: for USA you need to select a state ("(Make a selection first)"). See also download-problem-on-garminopenstreetmapnl-no-choices-to-select.

Which one do I download for my nuvi 855, osm_generic_windows.exe or osm_generic_gmapsupp.zip ?

(21 Oct '13, 17:27) nickstermon

you will find a gmapsupp.img file inside osm_generic_gmapsupp.zip. Copy this file to the GARMIN folder on your NUVI.

The osm_generic_windows.exe is a file for installing the map into MapSource or BaseCamp on your PC.

I normally download both files and install on on my GPS and the other on my PC. The FAC on http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl/ provides additional info in this regard.

@nickstermon: please read OSM map on Garmin (and the linked /Download page for the pre-made maps) in our docu wiki. It explains all of that.

It's too hard to follow the exact directions. Which of the following do I download? osm_generic_windows.exe, osm_generic_tiles.zip, or osm_generic_gmapsupp.zip? http://osm.pleiades.uni-wuppertal.de/garmin/generic/16-10-2013/8dad515dbd9aabed36d85f609ec715ba/

@nickstermon: okayokay, please read the "Description" column on the linked page. It depends on what you want to do. rovingmedic explained it already (above comment).

To simply get "OSM maps" on your device download a gmapsupp file and copy it on your device or on a memory card which you insert into the device (correct folder: "Garmin" on the device's memory or the memory card; I guess that also applies for your model), see docu.

RovingMedic, you have made it much clearer. When moving the gmapsupp.img file to my nuvi 855, will it erase any other file(s)? Is there any reason to install the osm_generic_windows.exe file for installing the map into MapSource or BaseCamp on my PC when I only plan on updating my nuvi 855?

(23 Oct '13, 14:46) nickstermon

@nickstermon: The nüvi 855 in mass storage mode (or the microSD card in a cardreader) acts just every other data storage media which you connect (e.g. like a UBS thumb drive). So … no, unless you delete file on the nüvi you will not delete anything.

No, you do not need neither basecamp nor …windows.exe if you only want a new map on your nüvi 855. You can select which map it should show/use in the devices options menu: "Tools > Settings > Map > Map info"

Will a new file interfere with the existing one? E.E.g, I plan on moving a gmapsupp.img of FL.

@nickstermon: Your question has several possible interpretations. A few answers follow:

  1. As far as I know often problems occur if you have several map set to "enabled/active" in the device's options. Only set one to active to have no problems.
  2. The used file systems only support one file with the name "gmapsupp.img", so rename the second, third, … file to whateverplaceholder2.img before copying - then you can have several maps on the device (older garmin devices only can have one file, but I guess yours can use several map files). Again, see docu! Please write here if it worked.

On the 855, these are the files: gmapbmap gmapbmap.sum gmapprom.gma gmapprom gmapprom.sum gmapprom.unl

Do I still have to change the name of gmapsupp.img?

(24 Oct '13, 16:05) nickstermon

@nickstermon: if there is no file which already has the same name (in your list there is no same name), then you do not need to change it.
