Wanting to try out http://api06.dev.openstreetmap.org/ using same login details as openstreetmap.org, but says I don't have an account on the former (though I do on the latter).

Must I create a separate login, or is that an error?

It's a separate login, and indeed a separate site, although data's displayed over tiles from the main site, so for example http://api06.dev.openstreetmap.org/browse/way/4295036531 shows the outline of a way on the dev server over the top of a tile showing a footpath that's on the live server only.

Thanks. Perhaps I've missed the point of the dev site then - I thought it was a way of updating the live openstreetmap, but by using the latest functions that were development. But it looks like the current data available for editing on the dev is not at all the same, so should I just be using the standard site for editing?

The data's different, which allows people to do things with the data that you wouldn't want to do with the live data (like this!).

However, if you want to use editing software in development with the live data, you can. You can use a bleeding-edge version of JOSM. There's also a similar version of iD available.

It's a separate database, which means separate user accounts, and indeed it has to be. The dev site is for testing new features, and these often require a change to the database layout ('schema').
