Hello,

If I try to open the sample.osm file for JOSM editor, my windows laptop does not recognize the file/extension and cannot open it. Is there an easy way to download or save a map, at least a screen shot, and open it in JOSM editor just so I can start? I am in the U.S. and JOSM says it does not have any visual data for my location, unlike in the UK. The OSM website (osm.org) has visual data to work with no problem for the U.S. but not JOSM. Thanks!I am brand new at this, any help would be appreciated.

The first time I tried the download green arrow it did not work, but this time it was bale to contact the OSM server! Got my NYC metro area downloaded to JOSM and it's all ready for editing. Thanks! I will read the beginners links you guys provided.

First start JOSM, then go to the file menu and "open" or use the toolbar button.

However, you can download map data inside of JOSM - no need for a .osm file!

  • You should read the information on the page @Hendrikklaas linked to. Most importantly JOSM/Guide.
  • Instead (in addition) you can go to http://learnosm.org and look inside step Getting started editing. Oh, are you reading there (there a sample.osm is mentioned)? "Open JOSM. Click the “Open” button in the upper left." is even described there.

JOSM takes a while to get used to it, but it is definitely worth it! Go on, try, learn, ask (if you cannot find a previous question of the same topic).
