is there a legit way to find an address on an online map? it looks like all the ways I can find rely or google data (obviously a no no) so is there a way to add an address tag without going to each location? Thanks

The answer will probably vary depending on which country are you in - so where are you?

Please note that "going to each location" is one of the core characteristics of OSM. ... because other data is not good enough (even if it would be allowed to be used)!

For the US there is a dataset called TIGER ... maybe this can help you in a first step.

And there are already some information about TIGER Release 2013 at the Mapbox-blog new-in-tiger-2013
