Hi there I have a standard two lane road flanked by sidewalks on either side. At certain points cycling is designated (shared with pedestrians) on one of the sidewalks i.e. only on one side of the road (though the cycle traffic can go in either direction on that shared path). Given that the road currently has sidewalk:both currently allocated, how do I make this clear?

Thanks Tom

As the OSM data becomes more complete, most mappers end up needing to represent all sidewalks as separate ways in order to generated correct and complete pedestrian routing instructions. Breaking the sidewalks separately would also seem to be a good solution to this case. It would only be necessary to break out the sidewalks around the section where bicycles can be ridden, although all the sidewalks could be separated if time permits.

The danger with mapping sidewalks as separate ways is that it doesn't work very well in places where pedestrians can cross roads wherever they like. Also, it can vastly overcomplicate things. For example, here:

http://www.openstreetmap.org/#map=19/53.95976/-1.08991

there are at least three ways alongside Leeman Road and a pedestrian crossing that simply don't exist in reality.
