Ever since the appearance of the right hand menu on Mapnik changed about two weeks ago, I've had problems with the map pane of the screen freezing or not opening at all. Am I alone, or is it a general problem which needs fixing? (I use either Internet Explorer 9 or AOL - which I think is based on IE9)

Hmm, use a not-Internet-Exploder-based browser, e.g. Firefox. :-) However, let's wait if someone else has IE available to test. Do you always have problems or only sometimes?

It just so happens that I have :) (although IE8 rather than IE9). I've not noticed any problems. There have been DNS issus over the last couple of days, so just to check - if you switch to the a layer other than "Standard" do you still see the same problem?

I am aware of this issue (related to notes) though.

I have the same problem. Explorer 9. The box on the left is empty and in the upper right corner a circle is spinning indicating that it is attempting to load something. Clicking on the aerial view does not do anything. The menus are greyed. I use iD to edit, operating system Windows 7.

To be more specific: When OSM opens, the left hand menu is there and the right hand icons for the zoom and layers, but where the map should be is completely grey except for the scale at the bottom left saying 3000000km/2000000mi. The Edit icon is greyed but if I try and press it Potlach does indeed open, but then the map area is entirely pale yellow. This now happens every time, whereas over the last week or two was intermittent, so I can’t understand what the cause could be. I do have Google Chrome and that does work, fortunately.

All the layers gave the same result, but now (since about 30 mins ago) when I refresh, the scale has changed to 10m/30ft and the grey has become half grey half blue or yellow and varies depending on the layer!

If you could upload a picture (either to here, or if that won't let you, to an Internet hosting service) that would be really helpful.

Managed to load a screen print to here: You can see from the excerpts at right that Transport and MapQuest are slightly different.

Erm - that's in the middle of Antartica; there's genuinely nothing there. Try zooming right out and then in again somewhere else.

Great, thanks! It works again now both in IE and AOL. When it was showing 3000000km the zoom wouldn't work, so whatever you've done seems to have cured it.

The question has been closed for the following reason "only a temporary problem on 2013-08-17 - close since it is fixed according to the comments. Not a real "question"" by aseerel4c26 21 Aug '13, 00:33

(adding a summary answer just to tidy things up)

It may have been a combination of the default layer being unavailable due to a DNS issue for a short time, compounded by the user's browser getting stuck in antartica

Whatever the problem was, it's fixed now.

From Wiki: Supported browsers: Internet Explorer is not (yet) supported by iD (bugs: IE9, IE10). Firefox shows (at least for some users) bad performance (a discussion; bugs: 1, 2 3). You may want to use another browser for running iD (a WebKit-based browser is recommended for best performance, currently).
