I am new to Open Street Map and would like to use the map as a reference for a map illustration I am creating. There are several locations that I want to highlight, or place a pin on, so that when I export the map image for my reference, the locations will be visible. Is it possible to create a customized or annotated view like this? In this case, I am not seeking to edit the map, but highlight multiple locations at one time for my own reference.

Thanks in advance for your help, and thanks for this wonderful tool - I just made a donation to the server fund.

I think the question is quite similar to e.g. how-do-i-add-a-marker-to-a-map except that you would have to simply take a screenshot after placing the markers, right? I think the new uMap service (see my answer there) would be suited for you.

If you want to make a "illustration" anyway, exporting (also possible in SVG vector format) and placing the markers yourself in an image editor software would be another option.

If you want to publish something OpenStreetMap-based please do not forget to add the proper attribution.

PS: Welcome to the OpenStreetMap universe and thank you for supporting our base infrastructure!

Thank You! I found a couple of very workable solutions in your answer - and I especially liked http://m.osmtools.de for it's simplicity. Umap didn't seem to like my browser and it ran really slowly, but I'll give that another try later. Umap looks like it would be really handy.

And those solutions save me from having to place the markers separately in an image-editing program. Although I work digitally, it's nice to be able to place markers, zoom in/out, and figure out the area I'm covering within the working map.

I've recently been educated on the copyright issues with maps in general and the attribution requirement for OSM, and I have been adding that credit line. Thanks so much for your help, I'm excited to know about OSM and hope to even do some editing myself at some point.

@LC1999: Thanks for the feedback! Yes, the main page of osm.fr's uMap instance also takes a looong time to build up (in my Firefox; there must be a bug somewhere in FF or on the page), but the actual map thing is running fine for me.
