I just started getting a box that asks to enter credentials for host. It says "Authenticating at the host 'datastore.hotosm.org. Please enter a valid username and password." It asks for a user name and password. I enter my osm info but it keeps asking for it. I have to hit cancel for the download of data to proceed. Is there a plugin or something that is requiring this login? I would like the box not to show up every time I try to download data.

You have installed the "separate data store" plugin for JOSM which is used by HOT to store data onto a different server in addition to OSM uploading. If you're not involved with HOT, and haven't set up your own SDS server, then you are unlikely to need the SDS plugin. Remove it from JOSM and all will be fine.
