How do you map forest parcels?

This is quite a common problem, but has not been fully resolved for tagging.

I would recommend reading the following two wiki pages (and their discussion pages) to get some ideas: man_made=cutline and place=section. A cutline will typically be used to mark parcel boundaries, whereas there is no common way of marking the actual parcel numbers (except that there is widespread agreement that they should be placed in a ref tag). In many European countries the parcel numbers are displayed prominently at the corners of the parcel and are frequently shown on maps (e.g., IGN Top25 Foret de Fontainebleau, Białowieża Primeval Forest MAP). In large homogeneous forest stands they are an important navigation aid.

The general idea is that the parcels are delineated by natural or artificial features (roads, cutlines, rivers) and that a relation is created to mark the polygon which is the forest parcel. What we have not yet agreed is a common way to tag these polygons (the purpose of the proposed section tag).

alt textIf you are using the iD editor the upper red circle is the polygon tool and after clicking on landuse and forest choose the type, deciduous or coniferous.

I draw a polygon tracing from bing, then add tags for managed forest landuse=forest or for naturally occurring I would use natural=wood see http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Forest and if the forests have lakes or clearings see http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Relation:multipolygon

Thank you for your answer. Now, how do you add the number of the parcel?

There is a name box. so perhaps oak forest 1, oak forest 2 ect.

Alternatively, you could use the ref tag for the parcel number while using the name tag for the forest name.
