openstreetmap is just as amazing as wikipedia. Very accurate maps, even for remote places. There is only one thing about the GUI which I cannot understand: Why is the Search-field not positioned top left - but "bottom" left, so that one has to scroll down on small screens to enter a search?

This is a forum for getting practical advice, not for starting debates about design or for requesting enhancements: the mailing lists and trac are better for those, respectively.

But for what it's worth, there's simply already lots of stuff on the top and not necessarily any room for more. Two things you can do:

  • Make sure you always log in - this removes some of the blurb from the left of the screen
  • Simply press 'Tab' in your browser to move to the first input field, i.e. the search box
