When I map a new area and cycle along the paths, there are more than often paths that I'd like to go back to later. How can I mark these paths? Is there something like "here is a path, that wants to be mapped" or "this path goes on from here (but I didn't follow it to the end)"? |

You can use Key:fixme directly while you are mapping without leaving the editor. "This path goes on from here" is usually handled by adding fixme=continue to the last node of the way's stub you've mapped. You can add whatever text you like to "fixme". Whatever is useful to other mappers. For example I sometimes use something like "fixme=bing aerials look like here is a path, please survey and add or add a note here if there is no path". To later get all fixme-tagged objects in an area (e.g. to survey there) you can use various tools. E.g. Overpass Turbo (fixme=*, displaying all values which are "fixme" is probably also possible), keepright (also allows exporting as gpx for your GPS device), OSMi. |

You can use OpenStreetMap's Notes feature to mark places where you know there are features left to map. You can then refer to these notes yourself, or other mappers can see them, and complete the survey of the area you've marked. One of the easiest ways to do this is to find the place where the feature should be on openstreetmap.org, and click the "Add a note" link in the bottom right-hand corner of the map. Fill in the note describing what's missing from the map, and submit the note. If you're a registered osm.org user, make sure you're logged in before creating a note, and you'll get notifications when other people comment on your note, or close it after correcting the map. I have found short pieces of path (30 meters)on the map, that have been mapped by someone seeing the start, which works OK. and it is my preferred solution. I have seen paths that have untagged arrow heads, and some have been given the name TBC (to be continued), these solutions not so neat and I would not use them. The new notes feature mentioned in Jonathan's answer is a good alternative. |
