I recently (about 3 wks ago) downloaded a map of Mediterranean region by choosing tile sections from a map. It was prepared then sent to me by email. I downloaded it and unzipped it and saved this .img file. I then copy and pasted it to my SD card on my Oregon 450 as per what I understood to be the instructions. The unit did not ever recognize the file. I have also tried to install it on Basecamp but it will not even recognize the file type. I have since updated my basecamp, Oregon 450, USB driver all to the most recent editions and tried again with no success. i have been reading endlessly to try and figure this out to no avail. Am I wasting my time or missing something obvious. I also have since revisited the website and it appears the whole mapping/download system has changed where the map is chosen as a whole area and then exported as one of 4 file types of which none is an img file which has now really confused me. So how do I get a topographic map of Italy on my garmin oregon 450. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It seems you don't understand the garmin.openstreetmap.nl website. I think you should read this first: http://www.dcrainmaker.com/2013/05/download-garmin-705800810.html

The easiest method is to find a pre-built garmin map img from places like this. http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/OSM_Map_On_Garmin/Download but if you want to create a map yourself see http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Topographic_maps_for_garmin_devices

For Mapsource/Basecamp to work, the img must be in a file in which its associated TYP,MDX and TDB files are also located. These files will have been created for the whole map from which you selected a section. You cannot just copy/paste one without doing some more work. Check the MapsetToolkit software that will show you how to do this; it requires you have the IMG and TYP file handy. The rest will be created. One small thing, it needs another software, CGPSMapper, to be installed as well. Use the free version. Once the map is visible in Mapsource, you can transfer it to your GPS. Basecamp does not allow you to do that, and you will need the Garmin Mapinstall for this.
