Hello everybody, in a few days I want to travel to Canada. We'll travel from Vancouver to Medicine Hat. I want to download the map, install it on Garmin etrex Vista HCx and I want to use the map offline in "Map Source" When I try to export this area, the system tells me, the area is to big. But even when I reduce it to only Vancouver the system-answer is still: to big .... What am I doing wrong? Thanks for your assistance. asked 12 May '13, 12:54 bikearnie aseerel4c26 ♦ |
The main database is designed for editing and therefore indeed doesn't allow to export more than a very tiny piece of the map. You can either download a Garmin map directly http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/OSM_Map_On_Garmin/Download or get the raw data from a mirror server http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Overpass_API/Language_Guide#Sample_map_calls answered 12 May '13, 13:07 Roland Olbricht Frederik Ramm ♦ |
I guess you are using the export tab on osm.org. It simply may be that the area is still too big, yes. Furthermore, exports are very resource demanding and restricted more during high-load times. You want an export for your Garmin? As far as I know you would not even be able to use the map formats offered by export in Garmins (at least not without processing on your own). Download a MapSource map installer (+ possibly a pre-made gmapsupp.img for your device) from OSM_Map_On_Garmin/Download. See e.g. basic-guide-to-download-osm-to-garmin-gps and list of garmin questions for more info. answered 12 May '13, 13:08 aseerel4c26 ♦ |
I know that if you have Garmin Basecamp installed and running on your PC and with your Vista connected you will be able to choose the gmapsupp as one of the maps on your PC. I have found that I can choose from the basic map or my installed OSM map. When I plug in my Garmin Nuvi I can choose the City Navigater map on that, (while its connected). I couldn't get this to work with Mapsource though.edit Note.connected unit should be in mass storage mode.I had to try a couple of usb leads to get it to work, I think the data connections in one lead are suspect. answered 12 May '13, 16:18 andy mackey I just tried it - etrex Vista is connected, on the Garmin the Map "CA-Vancouver" is activated, "Basecamp" started - but when I try to transfer the Map from the device it says: "No maps on the device" :-(

thank you very much for your help.
I installed already the "canada-map" from wiki.osm on my Garmin device. I think it will work - at the last I'll see the success in Canada.
But my hope was to have something on Garmin AND on my computer (e.g. for creating tracks and upload them to Garmin) using the Garmin-program "MapSource" or "BaseCamp". With my computer in Canada I've to work offline - that's the reason I need the map on my laptop. With the OSM maps here in Germany it is possible - but with the canadian-map ....?????
thanks so far
Frank
You can split any gmapsupp.img with http://gmaptool.eu/en for Mapsource. It even creates a .bat-file to install it.
