Hi all,

I would like to take a screenshot of an OSM served by Mapquest Open Map Tiles.

After modifying the image for game dynamics, I would like to use it in my game that I am developing for IOS.

My questions are:

Is this a license violation of OSM?

Is this a license violation of IOS?

If not, do I have to make my game free under CC-BY-SA?

Any help is appreciated.

You are in the wrong place here for asking about "license violation of IOS". Look for help at Apple regarding this part.

That is correct. My bad, I will ask in IOS forums. Thanks.

First of all, you should look at openmapquest terms.

Then, if you use a cc-by-sa picture, you should respect the licence for the picture, not for the all app. You can also use cc-by-sa pictures in commercial work.

I checked the open mapquest terms, as long as you give credit, everything looks ok.

Thanks for your explanation, the licensing of the screenshot vs the game it is being used in is more clear now.

Starting point for your reading about using OSM derived works or produced graphic tiles should be the page about copyright.

This may leadd you to some pages in the OSM wiki where you have more details and examples.

You may also enter the keyword or the tag "licence" in the search field of this FAQ site ... you are not the first one asking issues like that.

Thanks for the suggestions.

I have already searched the forum and read all the posts that contain the word 'license'.

"The cartography in our map tiles, and our documentation, are licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 2.0 license (CC-BY-SA)."

From this sentence, I assume that I need to investigate this document since I will be getting a screenshot of the OSM tiles and modify that image for in game use.

In that license it says:

You are free:

to Share — to copy, distribute and transmit the work
to Remix — to adapt the work
**to make commercial use of the work**

But it also says that

Under the following conditions:

Share Alike — **If you alter, transform, or build upon this work,** you may distribute the resulting work only under the same or similar license to this one.

That is exactly what I am gonna do on the resulting screenshot: alter and transform.

Not too much but, still...

And when I do that, the license says that I need to distribute my game (built upon) under the same license.

This is the part I get confused, it doesn't sound that you can use OSM in your game and sell it because you have to make it available under the same license.

Or, I completely misunderstood that licensing thing.

Any ideas?

without knowing the 100% correct answer about the licence question, I can only give another hint to the wiki pages about http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Games ... have a look at the used licences there.

in this FAQ site there are also questions and answers about using OSM maps in printed books ... as far as I know the whole book has NOT to be under the same licence as the single map is.
