Hello, I want to change a wrong surface of a way. It is "pebblestone"; but in the editor I can not change the surface to "pebblestone", only : unpaved, paved, Asphalt, concrete, Paving stones, Cobblestone, Sand,Gravel, Dirt, Grass, unset or unknown (compacted) is available. Want should I do?

In what way does "pebblestone" differ from the widely-used surface tag "gravel"?

I have look at wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Key:surface. I think pebblestones are just stones; gravel is a mixture from different parts.

From a geological point of view, "gravel" just refers to material of a certain size. The two pictures in the OSM wiki are both gravel. The material in this one looks like it has been created by breaking up a large lump of granite with a big hammer; whereas the material in this one is rounded by natural erosion (it looks like the sort of glacial deposit that's quite common in Northern Europle). They're both technically gravel, though (and a layman at a builder's merchants would also probably refer to both as "gravel").

( my mother tongue is german, so I have same problems to understand and explain such technical subjects. For some words I need a good translation to understand ... ) I think the surface of "my" way is just gravel too!!

You can ask a question in german and tag it as "lang-de".

@SomeoneElse: I think I would prefer to ride on hammer "gravel" with a bicycle and not on erosion "gravel" if both are loosely on the ground. I think the round edges would make the individual stones be more behaving like a liquid and pushed more away to the sides by thin tires. Not sure.. and not really useful to discuss here, too. ;-)

Do you use Potlatch 2? Switch to Advanced Mode (bottom left corner of the editor window) and set the surface. In Simple mode Potlatch 2 interprets the tags and only offers a limited choice of tag values.
