Where do I download the map images of streets and whatnot (the standard layer)? I only need a small part of the world. The XML data in the OSM files don't show the map images.

If you want only a few images, you can download them from the main map page, http://www.openstreetmap.org/ . Click the "share" icon (small window with an outward pointing arrow) on the right hand side of the map, then use the "Download" button from the lower half of the panel that opens up.

If you need too many images to download them manually, you can download them as tiles. You can download from OSM's servers if you do not exceed their usage limits; otherwise you'll need to host your own tile server. See the wiki page on tiles for more information; and Tile usage for the tile usage policy and limits.

Could you point out, right quick, where on the map--would one go to click (or select) "Map Image?"

You access the function from right side panel now. Click on the export icon (small window with an outward pointing arrow) on the right hand side of the map. Then have a look at the lower half of the panel.
