Hello guys, I would like to understand of country names are displayed at low zoom levels. Indeed, let's consider the following zoom levels for Cyprus:
So here are my questions:

A simple examination of the map at zoom level 3 leads me to note the following:
At level 4 we can find similar phenomena:
At level 5 Portugal is still not named, although most adjacent Spanish regions are named. In other words this behaviour is a widespread artefact of how the map tiles are generated: ultimately it resides in the collision detection algorithms in the Mapnik software. The map tiles are not meant to be a perfect example of the cartographers art: they never could be when automatically generated. Changing the underlying map data to just change the appearance of the map tiles is a sin: 'tagging-for-the-renderer'. Don't do it. Certainly there is nothing special about this behaviour for names in Cyprus or in other areas of the world where maps and boundaries may be politically contentious. If it is important for you that such names are given equal status or one set of names preferred over another then you should use the underlying data to render your own map. 1
@digfp: just a small addendum: There is not only one "OSM map" (OSM is just data). Maybe other map styles please you more.

Thanks a lot for your help and your explanations. I understand now that the country name display is managed by the Mapnik algorithm. Also thank you for the other map styles. I'm going to study this possibility. And of course, no changing of the map data for a different rendering. Best regards, Flex Pat
