Please help in finding these answers to me (I'm right now working on an App that needs offline maps FYI):

  1. Is it legal to use openstreetmaps in a commercial grade mobile/ web app?
  2. Does openstreetmap cover all locations offlne similar to what Google maps provide online; I primarily need the offline maps of woods area across USA, UK where there is no in-habitation, so do you think such areas are covered in the offline map?
  3. How often these maps get updated?

Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

1) yes, see http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Legal_FAQ You'll have to mention OSM as your data source.

2) OSM provides raw data. It means that you can build you own online/offline maps as you want. Regarding the data content, have a look at it. It may fit your need or not depending on the actual coverage.

3) raw data are updated "live": see http://live.openstreetmap.fr/
