I've recently acquired an iPhone and I'm looking for some recommendations on good applications for hikers (both free and commercial). Showing of OSM maps is a must.

The wiki has a list of iPhone applications that support OpenStreetMap data. Amongst those you are also likely to find ones that are good for hiking.

For completness sake, here are also the links to Android applications and to other mobile platforms

OpenMaps can take custom TMS URLs, meaning you can use maps created with Kosmos/Maperitive with it.

I find the MotionX GPS app very good. It displays OpenStreetMap and OpenCycleMap data and allows large areas of the map to be pre-loaded onto the phone, so you don't need a network signal when you are out on the hills.

It also does nice track recording, so you can import your GPS track back into OSM :)
