and if you just want to see the traces on a map for visualisation purposes, some of the sites that allow you to do that are listed at http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Track_drawing_websites answered 06 Apr '13, 12:30 Richlv |
OpenStreetMap does not produce maps that show uploaded GPX traces. A pure GPX trace does not contain enough information to make a map, and often needs to be postprocessed for accuracy. You must load your GPX track in an editor (all OSM editors have the capability to display GPX traces - in Potlatch 1, type "g" to load GPS data, in Potlatch 2 select "GPS Data" from the GPS menu, in JOSM and Merkaartor you have to tick a box in the download dialog to load GPS data from the server). Then you can create nodes and ways on top of your traces. This is, by and large, a manual process in which you add extra information that cannot be extracted from the GPX data, like road types and names. After you have uploaded your new nodes and ways, they will show on the map. This may take a while (see question "How often does the main (mapnik) map get updated" for details). answered 05 Jan '11, 10:46 Frederik Ramm ♦ 2
I actually met quite a few people who would like to see their uploaded track on a osm layer - to be able to share them with friends for example. This could be a feature request or GSoC project and might help increase the amount of upladed tracks.

A database of Open Source GPS Tracks would be extremely valuable

In Potlatch 2, you can also choose the "My traces" option (click the / triangle in the GPS menu to get this), which is an easy-to-use way of loading a whole trace at once. answered 05 Jan '11, 16:44 Richard ♦ |
