Why not ask your question on the new OpenStreetMap Community Forum?

Hi, I'm an OSM newbie, so please forgive faux pas.

Is it appropriate to add nodes for static aircraft, especially those used (in the UK) as "gate guardians" at the entrance to RAF stations?

If so, could you suggest key/value or tagging? They're not necessarily historic, nor tourist attractions.

Thanks,

A.

thanks all (sorry for the delay replying). Hendrikklaas' suggestion uses tags "historic=aircraft" and "tourism=attraction".

They aren't tourist attractions, but most are historic, so I guess that'll do!

You could take a look at this place they have several old airplanes standing around. http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=49.310717&lon=8.446043&zoom=18&layers=M, which are tagged historic=aircraft (used 425 times).

I would tag them as man_made=statue . This is probably deprecated (says the german "Howto Map A" Wiki Page), but it seems a good tagging.

edit: I don't think this is a good idea anymore. Use Hendrikklaas' answer. It's better!

The plane outside Heathrow has been tagged as tourism=artwork. I suspect building=plane as seen here is NOT recommended. There is one instance of tourism=artwork/artwork=gate_guardian in the database according to taginfo (where I found all these examples).
