Layers providing historical boundaries?

Hello, I'm new here, so forgive my ignorance. My dream is to create a series of historical maps that you could toggle through to watch history unfold. So you could zoom in on southern Europe and click on a button for 343 B.C. and see what the country boundaries were at the time. Then you could toggle to 323 B.C. and watch how the boundaries changed as Alexander the Great conquered much of the known world. I think this would be a great teaching tool for more visual learners.

In OSM, is there a way to create these sort of separate layers, one for each year, analogous to layers you'd see in Google Earth? Would a person be able to voluntarily add or subtract them? I don't intend to muddy up the present-day maps with historical boundaries, as I gather from other questions that that's not the primary goal here.
