Does anyone know if mapnik rendering will be updated to show objects tagged public_transport=platform? It seems to only show the old railway=platform tag at the moment.

That is ticket #4381 and the bad news is that no one has cared about it for a long time.

As explained here by Richard the Mapnik style is currently ported to Carto, so there aren't much modifications possible at the moment. But I guess (and hope) after the porting has succeeded there will be more and faster changes to the stylesheet than before.

I've seen at least two ways to handle this lack of support. Either double-tagging like http://www.openstreetmap.org/browse/way/146881716 or using the new scheme like http://www.openstreetmap.org/browse/way/164415122 - but adding a note tag about the ticket, keeping the "Don't tag for the renderer" philosophy in mind.
